Сайт The Game Awards напередодні заходу активізувався і опублікував список номінованих ігор цього року в різних категоріях. Чотири з найбільших проектів 2017 року - The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Horizon Zero Dawn, Destiny 2 і Super Mario Odyssey - отримали по шість номінацій. За ними йдуть Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice (п'ять номінацій), Persona 5 (чотири номінації), Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus (чотири номінації), Cuphead (три номінації) і PlayerUnknown's Battleground (три номінації). Компанія Nintendo отримала 23 номінації - більше будь-якого іншого видавця.
Ігри були відібрані представниками п'яти десятків впливових видань з усього світу. Голосування є відкритим для громадськості, і шанувальники можуть віддати свій голос за проект на веб-сайті The Game Awards. Саме шоу пройде 7 грудня в прямому ефірі на YouTube, Twitch, Facebook Live, Twitter, Mixer, Steam, Xbox Live і PlayStation Network. Його ведучим традиційно виступить Джефф Кейлі (Geoff Keighley).
